There are certain truths we hold about our world ...
Glaciers top Mount Kilimanjaro, the Amazon is rainforest, the Rio Grande is a river (and it’s grand), and the Great Barrier Reef is a “wonder of the world”—to name a few. As it turns out, these “truths” may not always be.
As travelers, we are at an intersection in history, where place meets circumstance and where reality may not match our expectations for much longer.
It was with this realization that Heather Hansen and Kimberly Lisagor set out to document places that could undergo dramatic transformations within our lifetime. Disappearing Destinations profiles 37 destinations from Glacier National Park to the Yangtze River to the Galápagos Islands—all locations that are unique and threatened, or emblematic of other places facing similar struggles.
Travel is more than just a visit to a destination. It’s about seeing a place at a particular moment in time, and understanding that it won’t always look the same. Beyond that, it’s about heeding your wanderlust with heightened awareness and a new sense of urgency.
See it now. The world isn’t waiting.
