HEATHER HANSEN won the Harper’s magazine award for Distinguished Magazine Writing in 1999, and has contributed to two books by Gail Sheehy, Middletown, America (Random House, 2003) and Hillary’s Choice (Ballantine, 2000). She lives in Boulder, Colorado.
Heather Hansen and Kimberly Lisagor are the authors of Disappearing Destinations: 37 Places in Peril and What Can Be Done to Help Save Them.
Avid globetrotters, they have biked, backpacked and bushwhacked all over the planet, writing about travel, the outdoors and the environment for Outside, Men’s Journal, Mother Jones, Modern Traveler, USA Weekend, The Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle and others.
The two met at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, where they honed their craft and thickened their skins before venturing into the unruly wilderness of freelance journalism. Years later, they set out to write a book that would redefine travel as the experience of seeing a place at a particular moment in its history, with the understanding that every destination will undergo change.
They hope their book will draw attention to some of the more destructive changes—especially those caused by humans who would sacrifice a geographic gem for short-term gain. They also hope it will inspire travelers to take a closer look at the cultural and environmental wealth of their favorite destinations.
